Seward Fish Co. Fishing Report May 2009

Seward, Alaska

Well the fishing season is here and so are the fish. The weather has been great, and has really turned the bite on. May 8th and 9th were great days to fish, the ocean was flat the fish were fighting. For those of you who are fishing out of my new drift boat this year you can thank this guy, Terry. He brought my truck and my boat up from Oregon this year. Thanks Terry

Capt. Randy Wells

Not only did I get a chance to fish the early season I will be back to fish the last two weeks of August. If you haven't booked a fishing trip with Seward Fish Company do so now while they are days still available. Thanks for the great fishing Randy, see you in August.

Fly Bob is back!! he is fishing already and he is the only guy I know who only uses a fly rod in the ocean, what a fisherman!! Fly Bob, Ted and myself fished on the 13th and 17th we got our halibut quick and easy the we moved to Rock Fish on our fly rods. I have some crazy video of the Rock Fish Jumping out of the water to hit our fly. Here are some still shots, we were 30 miles from the Seward Harbor look how flat the water is, and look at all the fish coming up to my boat. It was one of those days that you see once in a lifetime, unless you fish out of Seward.

Today the Seward Charter Boat Fleet donates its time and boats to the Military persons who serve to protect this great nation. the following text is from <http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?S=10420759> please visit this site to read the entire story. It causes me to choke-up each time I read it, and I was there. I donated my boat to 6 men who are serving in our military, some of then just got back from
Afghanistan and others were on there way. I can not tell you how proud I am of our persons who fight for this great county we live in.

At the end of the day there was a banquet for all who participated and our Govenor Sara Palin came to town. First she was at the fish cleaning tables just hanging out and shaken hand's. Then she was at the banquet, first she gave a heart-pounding, thank you to the military persons; then she participated in the awards part of the
event. Afterwards she mingled with all and stood for many photos.

Two men on my boat one prizes, the first won the mystery weight fish with a cash prize of $5000.00 and the other won a trophy for getting the sickest. I do have some video that was requested by the person who
got the sickest. I will try to get it up on my web site.

SEWARD, Alaska -- While many of those in the military focused on Memorial Day and honoring those who paid the price for freedom, late last week about 300 active duty troops and veterans savored a
community's generosity. They arrived at daybreak. Like a military flotilla, 30 charter boats began the race for fish.

The Perseverance is one of those boats. It made a two-and-a-half-hour run almost to Prince William Sound.

It's go time. The sights are set on the proverbial barn-door halibut.

That's not exactly what showed up. Instead of the barn door they mainly settled for chickens.

Along with their quest for halibut, these fishermen share something else in common: All are members of the military, and this is their day -- the third annual Combat Fishing Tournament to show appreciation.

Air Force Major. Eric Sell found out about this while serving in Iraq.

"It was almost unbelievable -- you're like, ‘Really? For free?' And then they tell us the whole day is going to be free including the banquet and dinner, the processing and everything -- just an awesome time," he said.

It is a combined effort by the Seward charter fleet.

"All the owners and owner-operators just give up their boats for the day," Perseverance skipper Jimmy Akana said. "There's no charge for anything. The cannery donates the bait for us, Shoreside Petroleum
even gives us a break on the fuel we're spending and all the crews out here are working for free."

Sgt. Shane Hammond leaves for Iraq later this week.

"Reeling in a halibut is a simulated heart attack -- the left arm hurts from holding the pole, you've got this pain in your chest from your pole being there, and you're reeling and breathing heavy. It's a simulated heart attack," he said. "That's as close as I want to get to a real one."

Cody Britton, now stationed at Fort Richardson, is from Wyoming. He's never been deep sea fishing.

"I think it's great," he said. "I think it's a great way to show us that they appreciate us. Sometimes it's forgotten, sometimes we're forgotten."

Even though they left the barn doors for others, they caught their share. The weather cooperated and they learned they're not forgotten.

"Getting ready to go and do our part, and I just love it," Hammond said. "Eighteen years in the military and I've never seen a community that supports the military as much as Alaska."

One soldier being deployed to Iraq said now he has an added reason to make it back -- he wants to be on the trip next year.

The event was started by Anchorage businessman Keith Manternauch and Bob Condopoulos of Saltwater Safari. They also gave away thousands of dollars in prize money -- $10,000 went to the fisherman who caught the biggest fish, a 183-pound halibut.

Well the last few days have been spent chasing trout on the river, this is a catch and release fishery, but one that many locals enjoy. We caught so many fish here are just a few picks.
The river is know for Salmon, many people don't know that the river also holds world record Trout. The Trout fishing is normally happening in Aug-Oct, but we could not wait, and it paid off. I will be back on the ocean tomorrow and the 30th of may. That will finish-up May.
June is getting booked-up and the fishing will be great, be sure to check back for more fishing reports and great picks.
